WAHS FBLA Advances to National Leadership Conference!
On Sunday, April 12th, 43 members of the WAHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) Chapter headed to Hershey, PA to compete on the State Level. The students had the opportunity to stay at The Hotel Hershey, and compete, present, attend workshops and network with fellow FBLA members from around the state of PA, at the Hershey Lodge Convention Center. The group was extremely successful placing in the Top 10 in 14 events. Award winners were:
Dr. Mark Watson, WAHS Automotive Tech instructor, tells us that, back in November, all seniors in the Automotive Program took a school administered ASE test to determine the 8 highest scores in the program (the maximum allowed entrance into the state exam.) These 8 students then took a State-administered on-line exam, where the two highest scores would be compared to high scores from other schools across the state. Litz and Schroeder scored amongst the top 10 in the state, earning the right to go to Hershey to compete in the Pennsylvania Automotive Association state competition. This contest consisted of 5 workstations (brakes, alignment, electrical diagnosis, precision measuring and waveform reading) and diagnosing and fixing a 2015 Buick Encore. The two seniors ended up winning that contest (highest written score in the state, perfect car and highest station score), earning the right to go to the National Automotive Competition in New York City to compete against the best teams in the country. This was the 5th appearance at Nationals for the Buckhorns, with the highest previous score being a 5th place in 2014.
The National Competition had 10 workstations (BMW job interview, CAN Bus, STEM, Brakes, Wheel alignment and Balance, Lexus wiring repair, Information retrieval, Hybrid vehicle repair, GM Mechanical, SP/2 shop safety) and diagnosing and fixing a 2015 Chevy Cruze. Tony and Nick ended up winning the National contest, and were the first team ever from Pennsylvania to do so.
For their victory, the team received a number of prizes, including full tuition scholarships from the Automotive Training Center, Lincoln Technical Instute, and the University of Northwestern Ohio, scholarships from Universal Technical Institute, Ohio Technical Institute, and the New England Institute of Technology, tools and accessories from Snap-on Tools, and various gifts from the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA), General Motors, Lexus, Lincoln Technical Institute, Nissan, Permatex, S/P2, Subaru, Toyota, and Universal Technical Institute. As the winning team's school, the WAHS Automotive Technology department will receive: a Toyota Donation Vehicle, compliments of Toyota; a Hunter Smart Weight Wheel Balancer, compliments of Hunter Engineering Company; a $1,500 Gift Certificate towards a Megatech Training Aid; the Digital Edition of Motor Age Training's Complete Car & Light Truck Automotive Set; access to Electude International's Online Automotive Training Program; a $1,000 Gift Certificate towards the purchase of products from Conlsulab Educatech Automotive Training; and a National Competition First Place Trophy.
Congratulations to Tony and Nick and Doc Watson for such an outstanding accomplishment!
